Expert perspective

Know what is included before you appoint your accountant.

We prepare Self Assessment returns for landlords, company directors, professionals, sole traders and investors. We also handle returns involving foreign income and gains, with specialist advice scoped where the residence or cross-border position needs further work.

Your agreed return service includes a tailored information request, preparation of the return and calculation from the records supplied, a review of relevant claims and reliefs, your approval before submission, and an explanation of the balance due and any payments on account. HMRC agent authorisation is arranged where required.

Personal tax services start from £400. The final quote depends on income sources, properties, disposals, overseas matters and the condition of the records. Bookkeeping, historic corrections, separate property CGT returns, HMRC enquiries and substantial tax planning are agreed separately where needed. There are no unexplained additions to the agreed scope.

When this matters

Recognise when the position needs more than a form

Early review creates time to find evidence, correct assumptions and make choices before a deadline fixes the result.

01

You are a company director

Salary, dividends, benefits, expenses and director’s loans need consistency with company records.

02

You own rental property

Property schedules, finance costs, jointly owned income and losses must connect to the wider return.

03

You invest or dispose of assets

Dividends, interest, fund distributions and gains can be incomplete on a single platform summary.

04

HMRC’s calculation looks wrong

PAYE codes, duplicate income, missing relief or payments may need correction through the return or direct correspondence.

The technical review

The areas we bring into one review

A defensible answer is based on the full factual pattern and is reported consistently across every relevant return.

Employment

P60 and P11D figures, expenses, professional subscriptions, share awards, termination payments and tax-code adjustments.

Business and company income

Self-employment, partnership allocations, salary, dividends, benefits and director’s loan consequences.

Property

Rental income and costs, finance-cost relief, losses, joint ownership and furnished holiday letting transitions where relevant.

Savings and investments

UK and foreign interest, dividends, fund distributions, offshore reporting status and tax already withheld.

Capital gains

Share pools, property, cryptoassets, gifts, losses, relief claims and separate property-return information.

Reliefs and payments

Pensions, Gift Aid, loss claims, tax deducted, student loans, High Income Child Benefit Charge and payments on account.

What changes the answer

The final liability is also a cash-flow schedule.

We distinguish tax for the completed year from advance payments and other deadlines so you know what each amount represents.

  1. 01
Are all sources included once, particularly amounts appearing in payroll, broker and HMRC records?
  2. 02
Which costs or reliefs need a claim and what evidence must be retained?
  3. 03
Does a payment on account reflect likely current-year income, or is a reasoned reduction appropriate?
  4. 04
Are there property, CGT or amendment deadlines that do not wait for the next 31 January?

Questions worth asking

Frequently asked questions

What records do you need for my tax return?

Usually employment forms, dividend and interest statements, pension and Gift Aid evidence, rental records, disposal documents and details of tax paid. We provide a tailored checklist based on your known circumstances.

Can you obtain information directly from HMRC?

With authority, we can access certain HMRC data, but it may be incomplete or delayed. You remain the best source for complete bank, investment, property and overseas records.

What are payments on account?

They are advance instalments towards the next year’s income-tax and Class 4 National Insurance liability where the statutory conditions apply. A balancing payment later reconciles them to the final return.

Can a late tax return still be corrected?

A return can normally be amended within a statutory window. After that, overpayment relief or disclosure routes may exist depending on the issue and dates. Penalties and interest should be addressed promptly.

Will you check my PAYE tax code?

We consider tax deducted and coding adjustments when reconciling the return. If a code is clearly using outdated or duplicated information, we can agree the next correction step.

When will I know the fee?

After we understand the number and complexity of income sources, gains, property and international matters. We agree the scope and fee before preparing the return.

How much does a Self Assessment tax return cost?

UA Tax personal tax services start from £400. The final fee reflects the number and complexity of income sources, properties, gains and overseas matters, as well as the records available. We agree the fee and scope upfront.

Can you help if I already have an accountant?

Yes. We can take over your personal tax return, review a defined issue or provide specialist advice alongside your existing accountant. Responsibilities, authority and any professional handover are agreed before work begins.

Do I need to visit your London office?

No. We work with clients across the UK using secure digital records, telephone calls and Microsoft Teams. Any in-person meeting is arranged in advance.

Can you help if I missed the registration deadline?

Tell us promptly whether you have a UTR, when you applied and what HMRC has issued. We review registration or reactivation alongside return preparation. A later filing notice does not automatically extend the tax payment date; the scope and delivery timetable must be agreed first.

What information do you need to quote for my return?

Tell us the tax year, main income sources, number of rental properties, any asset sales or overseas income, and whether the records are complete. Include any HMRC deadline. We confirm the fee and timetable after reviewing the scope.
